Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

The teachers in Year 1 are Mrs Rix and Miss Derwas.

We have the privilege of teaching and helping your child develop and grow during their time in Year 1. We recognise that the children have experienced a valuable play-based curriculum in Reception and we work hard to make sure the transition between the two year groups goes as smoothly as possible by building on children’s prior learning. We have lots of fun and we work really hard in Year 1.

Our Patron Saint is Saint Francis of Assisi and we celebrate his feast day on the 4th October.

RE is our most important subject in school, and is at the core of our curriculum. We visit St John’s Church regularly to celebrate Mass and you are welcome to join us.

PE (Physical Education)

Year 1’s PE day is Tuesdays and the children can come to school in their PE kit on this day.

Reading is really important in Year 1. Children need to read their reading book to an adult DAILY to help reinforce both their reading in school and their daily phonics lessons.

We teach English, Phonics and Maths every day. If you would like to help your child at home with Maths then practising number formation is very important.

The children are encouraged to use their best handwriting at ALL times and to practise every day!

If you have any questions throughout the year, please feel free to ask. We are always happy to help! We are excited to work with you this year and support your child in their next steps at St John’s.
