At St John’s, we aim to develop confident mathematicians who approach mathematics with curiosity, resilience and a willingness to solve problems. We want pupils to see mathematics as something they can understand, discuss and apply.
Our curriculum follows the White Rose Maths scheme and the National Curriculum. Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils build secure understanding step by step. A strong focus on number sense and arithmetic fluency ensures pupils develop the core skills needed to access more complex mathematics as they move through school.
We place high importance on the learning of timetables, enabling pupils to recall key facts quickly and use them confidently in calculations and problem-solving.
Teaching encourages mathematical discussion and reasoning. Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, justify their answers and make connections between different mathematical ideas. This helps pupils deepen their understanding rather than simply follow procedures.
Through this approach, we aim for all pupils to leave our school with a secure understanding of numbers, confidence in their mathematical thinking and the ability to apply their knowledge to solve problems in a range of contexts.
